What Is the Chord Progression Studio?
Chord Progression Studio is an original software-style harmony workspace built around three functional layers: secondary dominants above the key, diatonic home-key chords in the center, and borrowed modal-interchange colors below. It explains each chord's role and likely resolution, auditions ideas instantly, and provides an editable progression timeline with instrument tone maps for piano, guitar and ukulele. The workflow captures the speed of a physical harmonic reference deck without copying its artwork or limiting the result to static cards.
How It Works
Choose a key and chord depth, then select chords from the Secondary Dominants, Home Key and Borrowed Color bands. Add or audition each card, drag or move progression steps into order, duplicate and delete steps, transpose the complete progression, set tempo and play or loop it. Use the instrument panel to inspect chord tones, save the project locally, and copy or export the finished progression as structured data.
When to Use It
Use it for songwriting, reharmonization, arranging, film scoring, music lessons or breaking out of repetitive diatonic progressions while keeping every harmonic choice understandable.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a secondary dominant?
- It is a dominant chord that temporarily points toward a diatonic chord other than the tonic. The studio labels its target so the tension and likely resolution stay visible.
- What is a borrowed chord?
- A borrowed chord comes from a parallel mode, such as using a chord from C Minor inside a progression centered on C Major. It adds color while preserving a recognizable tonic.
- Where are saved progressions stored?
- They are stored only in this browser's local storage. Export important projects if you want a portable backup or need to move them to another device.
- Does it replace written notation or a digital audio workstation?
- No. It is a harmonic sketchpad for choosing and hearing chords. Export or copy the progression into notation or production software for detailed voicing, rhythm and orchestration.
